Syphilis is a sexually transmittable disease caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema Pallidum, and the primary route of transmission is through sexual contact. The test looks for the syphilis antigen in human blood. An antigen is a protein produced as a bi-product by the human body when fighting off a syphilis infection. The white blood cells works as a part of the body's immune system. This test therefore require a blood sample, which then is mixed with a chemical called a "buffer". When these two fluids mix a chemical reaction occurs, which is then interpreted by a sample cassete. If the syphilis antigen is present in your blood a red test line will show up on the cassette indicating a Syphilis infection has occured. These tests are very accurate, but we must emphasize that it only serves as a preliminary diagnosis. A definitive answer must be given by a licensed doctor.
